Ross And Rachel Were Originally Not Supposed To Break Up In Friends

Oh, Ross and Rachel. Even today, the duo from the sitcom Friends is a shorthand for two characters who obviously need to end up together, but have stupid things like careers and other relationships get in the way. Hell, even when both characters were single, living together, and with a child, they still managed to be stupid about the whole thing.

This annoying relationship tension tends to be the cornerstone of most sitcoms these days, but for Friends, it didn’t really come about until a few seasons into the show. Early on, they got together, and it wasn’t until the infamous “Take a Break” episode that they called it off. Thus followed a handful of seasons that, to this day, the idea of “Ross and Rachel” is shorthand for characters who spend most of their time apart but are ultimately destined to end up together.

As it turns out, though, it wasn’t originally meant to be that way. Speaking with Metro, producer and director Kevin S. Bright revealed that the idea for them to actually take a break came naturally:

“I would say initially when [Ross and Rachel] was planned it wasn’t planned that way, that came a little bit later. It allowed us to have fun with the show and give people something to root for. We were well aware the audience wanted to keep them together but everything that was keeping them apart – we realised when we got them together when the first kiss happened we go, ‘Wow, the air has kind of gone out of the balloon.’ There wasn’t that sexual tension anymore. I thought what Marta and David did, which was such a brilliant and brave move with their relationship, as soon as everyone got their wish the wish was taken away. It made it so much better when they did get together.”

Since then, the idea of having a couple to root for early on who would get together, break up, and then have us wait until the final season before the grand reunion, has become pretty commonplace and was even recently kind of recycled in Fox’s New Girl.

What do you think of this new revelation? Does it change how much you love (or hate) what happened between the two of them? Let us know down below!
