The new Captain America won’t be as quick to fight says actor Anthony Mackie. Mackie stars as Sam Wilson in the MCU, and his first movie as the new Captain America, Brave New World has been filming recently. Speaking with Inverse recently, Mackie spoke about how his Captain America will handle things. Sounds boring!
I can’t lie, on the outside, this seems duller than the Cap we had previously. However, I guess it will all be in the execution.
“It’s more so about his ability to connect and counsel,” Mackie says of his Captain America. “He’s not as rash to bear arms as Steve Rogers was. Having a super serum makes you impossible to beat, so your answer to everything is to fight it out. Whereas Sam Wilson can actually die pretty easily.”
“He definitely has the ability to, not manipulate, but understand someone’s shortcomings. Give them words of encouragement so that they’re not forced to action. The physical aspect of it is the last resort.”
“He realized that his ability is not to change the world with force; it’s about giving people the wherewithal and the recognition that they deserve so that they can make a change,” Mackie says. “I can go around and beat up people all day; it won’t matter. Those people are going to come right back and do the same sh*t.”
“[Brave New World] picks up pretty much right after that,” he adds, “with Sam back in the fold of, How do I fit into this superhero world?”

I mean, I get it, but I also don’t know if I’ll have fun with it. Such a hard role to take over. I never liked Cap in the comics, he was boring to me, sorry Cap fans. However, like everyone else I loved Evans MCU version of Cap and his moral center was key to making the Avengers work. Sam’s Cap can definitely play a similar role, but at the same time, I also liked the fact that Cap got stuck in and had superpowers. He was never the strongest or fastest, but he could do this all day.
I still think I’d have preferred Sam’s Cap to choose not to use his powers due to what he saw from John Walker rather than not have them at all. I’d have ended FATWS with someone injecting Sam against his will, so he’s stuck with it despite not wanting it. That’s a great position to be in, as he never sought the power like others did. I know a lot of Marvel fans disagree with me though, so I have to accept this is very subjective.
I think it sounds a bit boring. However, what do you think as Anthony Mackie says his Captain America won’t be as quick to fight? Thoughts below as always.
