I mean, yeah they tend to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on established I.P.s, but in terms of REAL risks, they tend to skew to the safer side of things, which is completely understandable. I mean, you can take a look at the featured image at the top of this article and see for yourself what I mean. We have odd, anthropomorphized cats running around. Doing it on stage is one thing, but doing it in live-action crosses heavily into the uncanny valley.
In the film’s defense, it is something we have never seen before, and it takes someone with true vision to go this far in such an odd direction. Add in the fact that it’s Tom Hooper, the guy behind Les Miserables, and you can see why a studio would take such a risk.
But it doesn’t stop it from being creepy.
