New Disney Animated Film To Be Original Fantasy Called Dragon Empire

Over the last decade or so, Disney has been on fire for their films — and perhaps most notably on their 100 percent original projects that aren’t based on any previously-existing fairy tale — I’m talking about the fun and heartfelt Wreck-It Ralph, the gorgeously-animated Moana, and the surprisingly political Zootopia.

Now, it sounds like we have another film on their development slate, and this news comes courtesy of the folks over at That Hashtag Show. According to the outlet, one of their upcoming films is an original project called Dragon Empire. Kiel Murray — writer of Cars and Cars 3 — is developing the script, and Paul Briggs — who was head of story on Big Hero 6 and Frozen — will be making his directorial debut along with co-director Dean Wellins, who was an animator on Tangled.

Story details are sparse, but the outlet did have the lowdown on some characters, and based on those details alone, it looks like the story will be Asian-influenced (with at least one name looking Japanese and nature and the other looking Korean — though I’m no Eastern name expert). Here are some of these details.

JAN-NIN: Female lead character said to be the heroine of the film. Jamie Chung has shown interest in the role, Disney fans will know her as the voice of Go Go in Big Hero 6 and the brand new series on the Disney Channel.

BOLIN: The lead male character who is expected to be comic relief, and a 900 year old mentor to Jan-Nin.

KATSU: Supporting male character not much is known regarding Katsu.

So what does this tell us? One thing I take away from it is that it’s likely going to be an Asian dragon — one more resembles an over-sized snake (think the dragon from Dragon Ball Z) — rather than a typical fire-breathing European dragon.
