Mainly known for her YouTube channel, Akana has more than 2.5 million subscribers. She starred in Miss 2059 and voiced characters in Big City Greens and Magical Girl Friendship Squad: Origins. Akana stars in the upcoming television series Jupiter’s Legacy as Raikou.
Emily Ting wrote the screenplay and directed Go Back to China based on her personal experiences. She made her directorial debut in 2015’s Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong that starred Jamie Chung and Bryan Greenberg.
Here’s the official synopsis:
The semi-autobiographical film follows spoiled rich girl Sasha Li (Akana), who, after blowing through most of her trust fund, is forced by her father (Ng) to go back to China and work for the family toy business. What begins simply as a way to regain financial support soon develops into a life-altering journey of self-discovery, as Sasha discovers her passion for toy designing and learns to reconnect with her estranged family. A bittersweet portrait of a fractured family, the family, also offers an honest look at the human cost of things that are made in China.
Films, like Crazy Rich Asians and The Farewell, opened more doors for romance and drama films featuring an all-Asian cast. Go Back to China is a relatable film that looks into the spoiled Asian-American children and the lifestyles of Asians back on the mainland. It’ll be an indie film to watch.
Go Back to China opens theatrically in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles on Friday, March 6 and will also be available OnDemand.
