Early Friday morning, Netflix released the first full trailer for Ava DuVernay’s upcoming miniseries When They See Us. The four-episode series tells the true story of five young African-American and Hispanic male juveniles. who were wrongfully convicted of the rape of Trisha Meili, a white female jogger, on April 19th, 1989. The case was referred to as the Central Park Jogger case and received nation-wide attention at the time.
The case came up again during the 2016 presidential election, due to then real estate mogul Donald Trump having purchased a one page advertisement calling for the death penalty of the five boys. In 2002, the men were exonerated when the real attacker—a convict serving a life sentence—confessed to the crime, with DNA evidence proving it. The five men successfully sued New York City in 2003 for malicious prosecution, racial discrimination, and emotional distress. The five were awarded $41 million in a settlement with the city. As recent as a CNN interview in October of 2016, Trump still believes the five men are guilty.
