In the photo, we can see Sophie Turner, who is playing Jean Grey/Phoenix, in a motion capture suit being choked by a similarly dressed Jessica Chastain. I can only assume that Turner will be on fire as the Phoenix in this scene. Chastain’s character is currently named “Smith” on IMDb but she has been described in an EW exclusive as “an otherworldly shapeshifter.”
This will be the second attempt to tell the story of the Dark Phoenix and it looks like they will once again get into it too fast. Many of you remember, unfortunately, the forced Dark Phoenix story in 2006s X-Men: The Last Stand and how there was no connection to aliens or outer space at all. At least they developed Jean, played by Famke Janssen, over the three original films. Turner has only had one outing as the character and we didn’t get enough time to really connect with her.

While this version of the story does contain space travel and aliens, the fact Jean already used Phoenix-like powers in X-Men: Apocalypse is confusing. The same EW piece mentions her powers are unlocked in a similar fashion to the comic book, which is good, but the fact the Phoenix is already in her is strange. This must be another example of Fox Studios’ great ability at keeping their continuity intact.
We can all hope that Dark Phoenix will be good, but those hopes aren’t very high for this writer. I can remember enjoying the first two films well enough when I was younger, but they don’t hold up. I actually liked First Class but I think it was the Professor X and Magneto story that I liked and not much else. Days of Future Past was good, but only great when compared to the others. They also immediately screwed up everything they had fixed with Apocalypse, which I did not like.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to arrive 14 February 2019.
