Octavia Spencer played some of the likable and empathic characters in her career. From films like Hidden Figures to The Help, she forged a persona on-screen presence that audiences adore. In Amazon’s Encounter, she starred as a parole office trying to save a father who took his children from a belief of an unknown invasion.

The film also stars Riz Ahmed, Rory Cochrane, Lucian-River Chauhan, and Aditya Geddada. Michael Pearce directed the movie from a screenplay written by Pearce and Joe Barton.

Here is the official synopsis:

A decorated Marine goes on a rescue mission to save his two young sons from a mysterious threat. As their journey takes them in increasingly dangerous directions, the boys will need to leave their childhoods behind.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with actress Octavia Spencer on her role as Hattie Hayes in the film. We talked about her character’s objective and her reaction to what the character was originally written in the script.

Octavia Spencer is an award-winning actress with three Screen Actors Guild Awards, three National Board of Review Awards, two Satellite Awards, two Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a BAFTA Award. Also, she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress from her three nominations, which is the second-most nominated African-American actress today. In 1996, she made her film debut in the drama A Time to Kill. After years in smaller roles in film and television, her breakthrough came in 2011 with The Help that earned her instant recognition. Also, her performance in Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station in 2013 cemented her reputation in the industry. She continued to be in many films, including Hidden Figures, The Shape of Water, Halloween II, Snowpiercer, The Divergent Series, Gifted, Instant Family, Onward, Luce, and Ma.

Encounter is in select theaters and streaming on Prime Video starting tomorrow, December 10.
