Open-World Harry Potter Game Could Hit In 2021 — Will Feature Little Involvement From J.K. Rowling

Ready for an open-world Harry Potter game?

The Wizarding World is one that has had better times. The Fantastic Beasts film series has been rather middling in terms of its success. It’s definitely been disappointing both at the box office and with fans, with many losing interest in the franchise altogether. And then we have J.K. Rowling, who has been quite the controversial figure on social media. Granted, she’s always been very outspoken, but in the past year or two, her comments against trans people have inflamed a lot of people.

It’s made such a splash that devs working at Avalanche Software have expressed anxiety internally. Obviously, this could potentially affect the way an upcoming open-world Harry Potter game could be received. Oh yeah, and in case you haven’t heard, there’s an open-world Harry Potter game currently in development!

We first covered this news a couple of years back when footage from the game leaked. It was never acknowledged by the studio and was eventually forgotten. According to Bloomberg, the game itself is very real and is on track for a 2021 release on multiple platforms, including the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. There is no word yet on if the current generation of systems will feature the game.

But what can we expect from the game? Well, for starters, it is a big-budget game that will allow gamers to roleplay as wizards, naturally. It will also have a vast, open-world that includes the Hogwarts grounds and its surrounding areas. Needless to say, this has been a dream of many of Harry Potter fans ever since we cracked open the pages of the first book.

But what about J.K. Rowling’s involvement? One source says author J.K. Rowling has very little direct involvement.

The game was going to be announced at this year’s E3, but will instead be announced following DC’s FanDome event. Then again, that decision was made before Rowling’s comments, so who knows if that’ll change anything. Are you excited for the new open-world Harry Potter game? Let us know your thoughts down below!
