Patrick Rothfuss Working On New Kingkiller Chronicle Story — But It’s Not Book 3

Fans may rejoice or curse based on this latest piece of news regarding the Kingkiller Chronicle. Fans of the book series that started with The Name of the Wind have been patiently waiting for the trilogy-capping novel. Seriously, they’ve been waiting since The Wise Man’s Fear released in 2011. That means they have been waiting nearly a decade to see that book hit. I mean, sure they did get the 2014 novella The Slow Regard of Silent Things, but that’s hardly the book fans are looking for.

It is with this in mind that I have some good — and some bad — news for you. Just to clarify things upfront, no, this news is not about book three, The Doors of Stone. Instead, it revolves around the One Shot Podcast, where a story set in the University’s Arcanum. This location is featured in The Name of Wind, so that’s pretty exciting.

Here’s what the story is about and how it’ll be told.

“Four students in The University’s Arcanum get unlucky draws for their tuition interviews with the masters and have to reckon with the possibility of taking a semester off. The well-intentioned Volli (Patrick Rothfuss), the bookish and distractible Garlich (Bee Zelda), the prideful and stylish Amara (Satine Phoenix), the irrepressibly rebellious Chett (Liz Anderson), and the biggest horse you’ve ever seen.”

The story sprouted from a role-playing game developed by author Patrick Rothfuss and podcast host James D’Amato. Now, it will unfold in story form in the form of new “chapters” every Monday.

I’ll admit I don’t fully understand the context of this story. It sounds to me like we are getting a playtest of the role-playing game through this podcast. Later on, once the edges have been polished, we’ll be able to experience a more complete version of the story.

“Telling stories like this will give me a chance to show off corners of my world that don’t appear in my novels.” Rothfuss said. “It’s playful and collaborative in a way that I really miss. Most importantly, these are stories that will let people spend time in my world sooner rather than later, while they’re waiting for the next book to come out.”

How do you feel about Rothfuss a unique type of story set in the Kingkiller Chronicle world? Let us know your thoughts down below!
