Oscars Ratings Increase For First Time In Five Years

Maybe the Oscars should go hostless more often. After several years of year-over-year losses in terms of ratings, last night’s ceremony looks like it’s a pretty solid success for all involved. Well, mostly. Of course, if you look too closely at the details it’s not necessarily the biggest success in the entire world, but it’s definitely a step up from what we’ve seen from the show last year.

According to THR, last night saw an average 29.6 million viewers and a rating of 7.7. Compared to last year, which saw 26.54 million viewers and a 6.8 rating in the 18 to 49 demographic, this is a decent step up — 11.5 percent and 13 percent, respectively. So, despite the controversy surrounding the show, it looks like they were able to come out on top, for the most part.

Of course, at the end of the day, this is still the second least-watched Oscars show ever, but it is a step in the right direction, which is something they were hoping for. After all, you’re not going to make huge gains like that in one show. The ceremony broadcast also lasted around 3 hours and 13 minutes — or around 41 minutes shorter than last year, which is probably a good thing.

I’m sure there will be plenty of people (myself included) who would prefer two and a half hours or so, but that’s coming from someone who doesn’t bother with the show to begin with, so my opinion is null and void. What did you think of the show last night? Let us know down below!
