Palpatine Was Dead Before Being Brought Back For Episode IX

In case you somehow haven’t heard the news, Palpy is back! I am of course referring to Emperor Palpatine, whose laugh has been echoing through the heads of Star Wars fans ever since they watched the trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The actor who plays Emperor/Chancellor Palpatine, Ian McDiarmid, spoke at the The Phantom Menace panel for the films 20th anniversary, and revealed a conversation he had with George Lucas concerning Palpatine. You can check out what he had to say below, but don’t get your hopes up on it clearing up how Palpatine is retuning in Episode IX.

“‘Is he…?’ And before I could even finish the sentence. ‘Dead, yes.’ ‘Well, couldn’t he perhaps…’ ‘No. He’s dead.’ ‘Well, wouldn’t it be interesting if…?’ ‘Forget it.'”

So just how is good old Sheev Palpatine back you ask? That remains to be seen, however there are a number of possibilities for his return. Of course the go to would be he cheated death, using the knowledge he learned from Darth Plagueis. This obviously conflicts with what Lucas told McDiarmid, but unfortunately, Georgie Boy isn’t in control anymore, Disney can change anything they want. What makes this all the more perplexing is that director J.J. Abrams is said to have consulted Lucas about Episode IX.

Most fans know that Palpatine had several clones in the Expanded Universe, so that is one possibility. He could also make an appearance as the first ever blue-glowy Force ghost from the darkside. However, me being a fan of Star Wars Rebels, I am going to say Palpatine’s return has something to do with an episode of Rebels that shows Palpatine messing around with all kinds of darkside magic, opening pathways into time itself. Since that episode aired I always thought it may come back around in Episode IX because I don’t think Disney would introduce time travel into Star Wars canon for no reason other than an episode of an animated series.

I mean, it’s possible Disney is using the character to draw in fans, and he may only have a cameo, or a much smaller role than we all think.
