As of late, I’ve had a strange attraction to Stark Trek. I grew up on my dad watching Star Trek: The Next Generation. The series I remember watching the most was Star Trek: Voyager. Then there was whatever Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was. I was always more attracted to the television series more than the films. I don’t feel like the latest films have been too bad, but the question for me is for how long are they going to be able to keep the cast? The last offering for the film portion of the franchise was Star Trek: Beyond from Paramount Pictures. So the question is what’s next?

That is a question that it looks like Paramount is also trying to figure out. According to Deadline, they have put a pause on the Star Trek film that Noah Hawley had written and planned to direct. Emma Watts, the new President of Paramount Motion Picture Group, is trying to figure out what would be the correct course of action for such an important franchise for them.

This move by Paramount has some thinking that Hawley may be on his way out. But that seems unlikely as the Fargo and Legion executive producer made the film deal because of his love for the original series. Other options they have are the Mark L. Smith Star Trek film that he wrote for Quentin Tarantino to direct. Last, there was another option that saw the return of the latest cast. Here the idea would be that Chris Hemsworth would return to star as Chris Pine’s dad in a time travel story.

Currently, according to the report from Deadline, it sounds like they like the idea for both Hawley’s film and Smith’s. Smith’s version is based on a classic episode of Star Trek that takes place earthbound in a 30’s gangster setting. It could serve as a Logan-like film when the core franchise is refreshed. The Hawley film would call for a whole new cast with a story that circles around a deadly virus, which may not be the best idea right now.

Stark Trek is still a powerhouse franchise for ViacomCBS. With their success on the television side, they want to make sure they get it right on film. It will be interesting to see how to decide to proceed. We’ll be sure to keep you in the loop! For now, live long and prosper!
