Parasite Director Bong Joon Ho On His Original Vision And Next Film

The days following the Academy Awards tend to revolve around one question: what’s next? That’s the question the media asks the artists and entertainers who were in attendance at the Dolby Theatre Sunday night. No one is answering that question quite as often as Parasite writer-director Bong Joon Ho.

After cleaning house at Hollywood’s big night—walking away with the Oscars for Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film—everyone is asking Bong what projects he has lined up. Bong did not hesitate in giving his answer, informing the press that night of the following:

“I have to work, it’s my job. So I’ve been working for the past 20 years, and regardless what happened at Cannes and Oscars, I had been working on two projects before then, I’m continuing to work on them, nothing has changed because of these awards. One is in Korean and one is in English.”

Aside from Bong telling Variety that they “are not big films,” no information has been given. What we do know is that the newly-crowned Oscar-winning filmmaker has some plans for television. First up, Bong will be acting as executive producer for TNT’s adaptation of his 2013 film Snowpiercer, starring Jennifer Connolly (Beautiful MindHulk) and Daveed Diggs (HamiltonBlindspotting). After that, he will be acting as producer for HBO’s adaption of Parasite. Bong has commented on how he originally envisioned Parasite as a six-hour film. Since that did not happen, the series will incorporate the ideas that did not make the final cut. Bong explains:

“There were so many stories that I thought of that could happen in between the sequences you see in the film, and some background stories for each character. I really wanted to explore those ideas freely with a five-or six-hour film. You know, with Bergman’s Fanny And Alexander, there’s a theatrical version and there’s a TV version. So with the TV series for Parasite, I think we’ll be able to create a high-quality, expanded film.”

Yet, Bong has said he shows no interest in adding big studio or superhero franchises to his list. He has said that while he enjoyed James Gunn’s Guardians Of The Galaxy  and James Mangold’s Logan, he states that “it’s just best to do what you’re good at. And so I don’t really think Marvel and I are suitable for each other. That’s something I just intuitively feel.” Bong looks to follow the outline made by Quentin Tarantino, prioritizing his original ideas and making original cinema.

In the end, it looks like Bong plans to keep on doing what he does best—and that’s great news for the film industry.
