Strange as it may seem initially, it appears Patrick Stewart is hinting he could be set to make a cameo in Star Trek: Discovery. The actor is probably best known for playing Jean Luc Picard, Captain of the Enterprise in The Next Generation era, was recently interviewed at a red carpet event by Red Carpet News TV. Stewart was asked in the video below if he had seen the new TV series Star Trek: Discovery.
As you can see Stewart gives a wry smile before saying:
“No, I haven’t. But I may have good cause to look at it very soon.”
The reason this is rather surprising, is that Star Trek: Discovery is set hundreds of years before Jean Luc Picard every existed. The USS Discovery was traversing space 10 years before the original Star Trek series timeline. In the final episode of Season 1, the Discovery and the classic Enterprise came face to face. So how could Jean Luc Picard show up hundreds of years before his birth? Very easily actually considering this is Star Trek we are talking about, and time travel has always been a key element of the Star Trek narrative. Every series or set of movies has at some point gone deep into time travel, even Discovery itself in Season 1.
The USS Discovery is powered by a new technology called a spore drive and we already know this spore drive is quite capable of traveling through both time and space, along with alternative universes as well. It’s not only possible but for me very likely (given Stewart’s response) that Jean Luc Picard could show up in an episode of Star Trek: Discovery. When would he show up, is a far harder question to pin down?

Season 2 production is underway, but we still don’t expect to see Season 2 hit CBS or Netflix outside of the US until at least 2019. Could Stewart show up in the latter half of Season 2?
Details on the plot or anything much else about Season 2 are still being kept tightly under wraps. However it plays out, I know I will be tuning in when Star Trek: Discovery returns. For me, Discovery was a return to form for Star Trek after three disappointing rebooted movies, (yes I know some people like them, I’m just not one of those people).
