Patty Jenkins Says WB Made Her Change The Ending To Wonder Woman

In three days Wonder Woman 1984 will see its release here in the United States. The film will be available in theaters, depending on where you live, as well as HBO Max. Director Patty Jenkins recently spoke with IGN and discussed how the original Wonder Woman ending battle was altered to a big, CGI heavy showdown from a smaller more personal affair.

During the interview, Jenkins revealed that the third act of the first Wonder Woman film was also smaller in nature, but that Warner Bros. made her change the ending. You can check out what she had to say about it below.

“The original end of the first movie was also smaller, but the studio made me change it at the last minute. So that’s always been a little bit of a bummer that that’s the one thing people talk about, because I agreed. And I told the studio we didn’t have time to do it, but it was what it was. I ended up loving it, but that was not the original ending of the movie.”

This is expected, and not really surprising. Unfortunately, it’s something those on the creative side of the industry have to deal with from time to time.  Well-intentioned studio interference. Jenkins continued, talking about the differences in the endings of the first and second Wonder Woman films.

“This time around, you know what I loved about it? I love that [Wonder Woman 1984] has both at the end. We had a visual effects, a big battle, which I just dug into and had such a blast executing, which I felt so satisfied with. But ultimately the end of the movie is much more pared down. That was really, really fun. No spoilers, there’s all kinds of stuff going on, but it was really fun to shape it differently.”

I am a fan of both the CGI spectacle, and the intimate confrontation, or even a combination of the two. For the most part, I want what best fits the story. But as I mentioned above sometimes the business side of things gets in the way. It’s an unfortunate, but a somewhat common aspect of big-budget filmmaking.
