Paula Garces on Comic to Video Game with Aluna: Sentinel of the Shards [Exclusive Interview]

Paula Garces wasn’t going to be satisfied with only be a television and film actress. Her entertainment career spanned from playing Maria in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle to Tina Hanlon in The Shield to Geny Martinez on Netflix’s On My Block today. During a promotional tour of her films at San Diego Comic-Con International more than a decade ago, it sparked her to create a central Latina story in comics with The World of Aluna. Now, she expanded her resume into the video game world with the launch of Aluna: Sentinel of the Shards.

Aluna: Sentinel of the Shards follows the exploits of Aluna, the warrior daughter of Spanish conquistador and South American nature goddess Pachamama. Raised in early 16th century Spain, Aluna escaped to the New World only to realize it was her true homeland. Aluna: Sentinel of the Shards sets our heroine on a quest through Inca mythology as she strives to restore the amulet her goddess mother entrusted to her, and fulfill her true destiny.

In the video game, there is non-stop real-time combat, exploration of a new world, and battling mythological creatures. Aluna utilizes history weapons of the Old World (South America) and the New World (Spanish Empire. There’ll many fighting styles as she unlocks powerful magical abilities across three schools of magic.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta had an extensive conversation with actress, producer, comics writer and now video game developer Paula Garces. We talked about the Aluna franchise, Incan lore, filling a niche, comics, her previous work, and most importantly—the video game.

Paula Garces is an actress, who made her debut in the sci-fi adventure Clockstoppers in 2002. Later, she was cast in the hip-hop comedy Marci X opposite to Lisa Kudrow and Damon Wayans. Following that film, she was seen with Tommy Lee Jones in Man of the House. Her breakthrough then arrived as Maria in the comedy Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and reprisal in the sequel Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. On the television side, she appeared in NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, CSI: Miami, and the The Shield. Currently, she plays the motherly character Geny Martinez in Netflix’s On My Block.

Aluna: Sentinel of the Shards is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on May 26.
