PBS’s American Coup: Wilmington 1898 | Brad Lichtenstein on Forgotten Dark History of Race Massacre

American Coup: Wilmington 1898

America remembers the Tulsa race massacre of 1921 that destroyed countless Black lives.

Before that event, a similar riot occurred in Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1898 that had seemingly been erased from history and destroyed Black businesses, murdered innocent victims, and drove countless families out of town.

In the documentary film American Coup: Wilmington 1898, as part of the American Experience series for PBS, filmmakers Brad Lichtenstein and Yoruba Richen brought this dark moment in United States history back to light so it won’t be forgotten.

Here is the official synopsis:

American Coup: Wilmington 1898 tells the little-known story of a deadly race massacre and carefully orchestrated insurrection in North Carolina’s largest city in 1898—the only coup d’etat in the history of the United States. Stoking fears of “Negro Rule,” self-described white supremacists used intimidation and violence to destroy Black political and economic power and overthrow Wilmington’s democratically-elected, multi-racial government. Black residents were murdered, and thousands were banished. The story of what happened in Wilmington was suppressed for decades until descendants and scholars began to investigate.
