Pennyworth Stars Ben Aldridge And Emma Paetz On Playing Batman’s Future Parents [Exclusive Interview]

Epix’s Pennyworth Interview with Emma Paetz and Ben Aldridge

There are three characters in comic book history that I always feel for the most. Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben and DC’s Martha and Thomas Wayne. The obvious reason why is because in most stories we see them in they are getting shot! But we know that we wouldn’t have Spider-Man or Batman with those tragic events in their lives, which is why those moments are so important. But it also doesn’t give us too much on those characters. While I know there are comics with stories with those characters they are not common.

Lucky for us EPIX’s Pennyworth has given us a look at what could have been the lives of both Thomas Wayne and Martha Kane when they met. Who would have thought that we would find them in the middle of a civil war in England? Also, the fact that they both met Alfred during that time.

In the second season of Pennyworth that debuts this weekend, we continue to see their growth as characters and eventually soon as a couple. While this series is not to be considered necessarily cannon in the DC Universe, it is entertaining to see their stories on television. We all love Bruce Wayne but what about those around him that molded him? In this series, Thomas Wayne and Martha Kent are played by Ben Aldridge and Emma Paetz.

Here is the synopsis for the second season of Pennyworth:

“A year after the explosive events of last season, England finds itself embroiled in a devastating civil war. With the powerful, neo-fascist Raven Union, led by Lord Harwood (Jason Flemyng) threatening to control the entire country. North London remains one of the few resistance holdouts remaining. It’s here in the West End Neutral Zone, that we find Alfred Pennyworth. After years in the British Army, his training with the SAS has taught him to be a cynical optimist – expecting the worst, but knowing that he can handle it. Now running The Delaney, a black-market Soho club that welcomes everyone, regardless of their politics, Alfred, with his SAS mates, Deon “Bazza” Bashford (Hainsley Lloyd Bennett) and Wallace “Daveboy” MacDougal (Ryan Fletcher), is now in search of a way out – before London, and his country burns itself to the ground. And he’s got his eye on America.”

Ahead of the release of the second season, LRM Online had the opportunity to talk with Aldridge and Paetz. During the interview, we discuss what it’s like to take on iconic roles that we are used to seeing them always dying in. Along with that, we discuss their current relationship status and what the heck they are doing in the middle of a civil war. Be sure to check it out down below!

EPIX‘s Pennyworth premieres December 13th, 2020 at 9/8c.
