PlayStation 5 May Come In Limited Quantities, Be More Expensive Than We Thought

Sony had recently said they don’t anticipate the COVID-19 pandemic to affect the release of the PlayStation 5. According to them, they are still on track to put out the console this holiday 2020 season as originally planned. However, if a recent report from Bloomberg is any indication, it may actually affect their plans more than they originally let on. The outlet states that Sony plans to produce a lot fewer units in its first year than they did in the previous generation (the PlayStation 4).

So how much fewer are we talking? They released the PlayStation 4 in November of 2013, and in its first two quarters, it sold a respectable 7.5 million units. According to the outlet, the company has told its assembly partners that it would make anywhere from 5 to 6 million units of the PlayStation 5. That number may not seem like a lot less, but that’s been a  20% and 44% drop in product. And that doesn’t take into account that that’s comparing a number produced versus a number sold.

However, if you’re super concerned about not being able to get your grubby hands on it, there may be some…good news? I say that with a question mark because it’s definitely a dark cloud with a slight silver lining. In the past, we reported on rumors surrounding the console costing as little as $399 USD at its launch. But that may not be the case. As it stands, its base model is anticipated to run between $499 and $549.

Now, that’s not super expensive, but it is substantially more expensive than the PlayStation 4’s $399 launch price. This will effectively make the console less likely to be adopted quickly by most consumers. As such, it may be a bit easier to find one early on than you’d expect. The reason for this change in price from last generation is being pegged on the increased component costs. In fact, Sony has faced difficulties because of component scarcity, which has led to the their struggling in pricing the system.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Sony pushing for release this year. In fact, I recently wrote a piece discussing why this upcoming generation should be delayed. Between the pricing and planned units, it’s getting harder for me to think a 2020 generation is a good idea.

What do you think of all this? Is Sony wise to push for a holiday 2020 release at an increased price point? Let us know your thoughts down below!
