San Diego Comic-Con Has Been Officially Canceled For 2020

It’s happened, folks. I mean, we all saw this coming, considering the current pandemic landscape, but now it’s official. San Diego Comic-Con has been officially canceled. The event was originally scheduled to take place from July 23 to July 26. This will mark the first time in 50 years that there has been no San Diego Comic-Con.

“For the first time in its 50-year history San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), the organizers behind the annual pop culture celebration, announced today with deep regret that there will be no Comic-Con in 2020,” organizers said in a statement. Again, this hasn’t really come as a surprise to us, but it is a chilling re-confirmation of just how serious this whole thing has become.

Given that we are currently at the point where groups larger than 10 are greatly discouraged across the country, it makes sense. After all, last year saw 135,000 attendees at the convention — and that’s not even counting people who just stopped by the nearby attractions. The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, recently spoke to the idea of many events with large groups would not be allowed until there was herd immunity. As such, we called into question whether or not 2021 was also in jeopardy.

However, the organizers have already put July 22 to July 25 in the books for 2021. Of course, all of that could change at the drop of a hat. It all depends on how the pandemic shakes out. But that’s where things stand now.
