Thor: Ragnarok showed fans a different Thor, he had a different attitude with a less restrained personality, simply put, he was a lot more fun. Avengers: Endgame also brought moviegoers a different kind of Thor, one not so fun, depressed and out of shape.
As it turns out, Thor putting on some extra pounds in Endgame was in the works for much longer than any of us ever would have thought. How long you ask? Try before Ragnarok was finished filming, so right around two years ago. Co-writer Stephen McFeely recently spoke with Hollywood Unscripted and gave some insight into the matter, you can check out what he had to say below.
“So it basically went movie one and then movie 2, with the pretty big exception of all the Asgard stuff. So that (scene) during Cathedral was early in the schedule and that was movie two. So that was shot two years ago. And it’s always blown my mind that, you know, we were using heavy Thor well before the first movie ever came out.”
This pretty much explains why the Russo brothers were posting photos from the set of Thor: Ragnarok. Marvel’s security protocol must be just shy of Area 51, that’s a long time to keep a lid on such a thing. However, shooting the fat Thor scenes so far in advance may have in its own way helped keep the secret.
