Pokémon Sword & Shield Have Sold Over 16 Million Units

To say Pokémon Sword & Shield have been controversial entries in the Pokémon franchise is an understatement. It was something that started out as whiny complaints about the absence of a national dex (meaning not every Pokémon from the history of the franchise would make it to the game) and it evolved into something much bigger. Before long, gamers were complaining about the graphical quality fo the game, the lack of risk-taking, and everything in between.

And it all culminated in a supposed desire to boycott the game. But would this boycott actually work? Would gamers be able to keep their fidgeting fingers off the next entry in the monster-battling franchise? The answer seems to be a resounding no.

Nintendo has revealed in their latest financial highlights that between the two games, Pokémon Sword & Shield have sold 16.06 million units worldwide. Needless to say, that’s nothing to sneeze at, and it gives them a good platform for the upcoming paid DLC for those games.

I’ll admit that I’m a bit disappointed by this. Why I wasn’t totally into the idea of boycotting, I did lament the idea that they’ve only ever really iterated in this franchise. I’m still waiting for an entry that eschews the old battle system in favor of something more unique and dynamic…but I know I’ll be waiting around a long time for that, as these sales indicate the series is alive and well.
