Recently, it has been all over the entertainment world that legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg was on a mission to restrict Netflix’s ability to have its films nominated for Oscar contention. Spielberg’s stance had been stated that he believes their films should have a theatrical run in order to be considered. It is well-known that Spielberg wishes to preserve the theater experience and many have viewed this as a way to do so.

Well, now it seems that Spielberg isn’t actually mounting any sort of attack against the popular streaming service at all. This comes from Spielberg’s long-time friend and Dreamworks producing partner Jeffrey Katzenberg. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Katzenberg says the whole thing has been created by misreporting. Katzenberg states the following to THR:
“I talked to Steven about this yesterday. I asked him very specifically — I don’t have any skin in this game anymore — he said, ‘I absolutely did not say that.’ He actually said nothing. What happened is a journalist was onto a story about this and had heard a rumor about Steven. They called a spokesperson to get a comment and honestly, just twisted it around. One, Steven didn’t say that, and two, he is not going to the academy in April with some sort of plan. But he has not opined at all, nor has he aligned with some specific thing.”
So maybe, just maybe, this whole Spielberg versus Netflix showdown was just another overreaction. Perhaps all is well in the world of film. Time will tell.
