PS5’s Looter-Slasher Godfall’s Tone Inspired By Stormlight Archive, First Law, And Foundation

This past week, during the Game Awards, gamers got their first look at some of the new content coming in the next generation of gaming. Of course, we got that Xbox Series X reveal, but we also had a look at one PlayStation 5 game in the form of Godfall, a self-proclaimed looter-slasher that allows you to take control of armored behemoths.

If you’ve actually had a chance to read the Stormlight Archive from Brandon Sanderson, you may have noticed that the armor-clad heroes look an awful lot like they’re wearing Shardplate — a special armor from the series. Of course, armor, in general, is a fantasy trope, but there was something about the way the plates interlocked that felt very specifically Stormlight Archive-y.

Apparently, that’s not really a coincidence, as it serves as one of the inspirations for the game’s tone, as revealed by creative director and CEO of Counterplay games, Keith Lee.

“Brandon Sanderson’s ongoing The Stormlight Archive series, Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law trilogy and Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series sets the tone and texture of our fantasy world. The long-running Monster Hunter series with their diverse weapon class playstyles ranging from fast combos to more deliberate play has always drawn us together as a team.”

Of course, the inspirations are far and varied, but the similarities to Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive don’t end there, as it looks like there are pretty solid parallels to his Knights Radiant — who come together to prevent the end of the world — and even the Shardplate worn.

“As an avatar, you play as one of the last remnants of an exalted Knight’s Order intent on stopping the apocalypse and preserving the last vestiges of their world. You will be able to play all three of the heroes you see by acquiring and donning their armor sets, known as Valorplates. Besides these three, you will uncover and equip additional ancient Valorplates lost in time in your journey, each with their own characteristics and historical lineage.”

That all likely speaks to the nature of tropes in any genre, but it’s a fun little parallel I think fantasy fans will enjoy. If we won’t be getting a game adaptation of some of these books, a game like this is a nice compromise.
