Review: Ballers Season Five – ‘Municipal’

The separate business paths of Spencer (Dwayne Johnson) and Joe (Rob Corddry) continue to go through rocky roads as the final season of Ballers progresses. Meanwhile, Ricky (John David Washington) and Vernon (Donovan W. Carter) consider detours in their journeys while Charles (Omar Benson Miller) seeks to continue his current route.

Charles, about to begin the final year of his contract as general manager with the Rams, is looking for an extension. However, Thomas (Kevin Durand) doesn’t seem to be a hurry to discuss that just yet. Charles’ decision to release Kisan (Kris D. Lofton) after lying about the gun altercation may be the cause for Thomas’ prolonging of contract negotiations, which could cause in issue with Charles’ family plans.

Upon the advice of Ricky Jerret, Kisan decides to see Spencer about an opportunity with the Kansas City Chiefs. Upon verifying that the video will not see the light of day, Spencer demands that Kisan be honest with him about everything, which Kisan eventually is. In doing so, Spencer welcomes Kisan to the organization.

Vernon continues his debate with Reggie (London Brown) and Jason (Troy Garity) over his future. The latter are focused on having him resign with the Cowboys while Vernon feels he’s done putting his life on the line on the field. The gaming industry and a future with SportsX continue to garner his attention through the numerous discussions.

Joe successfully acquired another financial backer for SportsX, but not before seeing what he believes to be Kate flirting with the potential investor. However, Joe’s jealousy is quickly erased when Kate (Catherine Haena Kim) reciprocates the same feelings for Joe. At the moment, things look to be going as Joe had hoped—unless his finances prove to be an issue.

As for Ricky, the former star is looking to reinvent himself as he hits a crossroads. That reinvention leads him to a potential show on SiriusXM. In telling stories about his career, Ricky decides to vent about Spencer, calling him out as narcissist who in the end cares nothing about the players. Much to Ricky’s surprise, Spencer was listening to the show and decided to call in. Spencer explains that Ricky has it all wrong and he plans to prove it at the upcoming NFL owner’s meeting.

The next six episodes look to focus heavily on how Spencer plans to shine the NFL light back on the players, how Ricky continues on his new platform, and how Joe steps closer towards success. With those moves taking place, they’re bound to make some big waves in their respective fields. Moves that may create some major push back for our key players.
