Review: Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina Part 3 Is Devilishly Perfect

CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA

Third time is a charm for the human/witch hybrid Sabrina Spellman and her Greendale coven.

Last Friday, Netflix premiered the third installment of its hit comic adaptation Chilling Adventured Of Sabrina. With part two’s cliffhanger leaving Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) aware of her Morning Star bloodline–while her boyfriend Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) is locked away in Hell with Lucifer trapped inside his body–this writer was left wondering how showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and company could continue the story.

Much to this writer’s delight, the production did so in a beautifully high camp/horror sort of way.

Part three starts right where it left off. Sabrina and the Fright Club venture into Hell–currently under the management of Lilith (Jenna Berman)–to rescue her boyfriend Nick. Traveling through the circles of Hell with her crew like Dante, Sabrina succeeds in her mission. However, her actions create a whole new ripple thought Hell. One that opens the door to a new successor to Lucifer’s throne, while a society loyal to the “old gods” emerges to resurrect nature’s rule. All this while Sabrina, who’s just joined the cheer squad, learns that Nick isn’t quite the same after his time down below.

This third outing for the Spellman crew is easily my favorite of the series. Its full of camp, chills, laughs, drama, and a pinpoint attention to historical, biblical, and medieval literature. The writers (lead by showrunner Aguirre-Sacasa) put their all into this season–delivering a balance of tongue-in-cheek humor, horror movie tropes, and teen romance. With the entire cast firing on all cylinders, thanks to a story that delves deeper into supporting characters as well as the leads, Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina: Parts 3 hits a grand slam. The final episode leads into the potential storyline for part 4, and this writer will be eagerly awaiting its premiere.

Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina: Part is available now on Netflix.
