Review: CNN’s The Movies – “The Eighties”

As LRM contributors, creative writers are granted the privilege to discuss their most treasured genres in pop culture. For this writer, that top tier of entertainment are motion pictures. The title of “film fanatic” is one this computer keyboard-slamming former thespian wears proudly. From Richard Donner’s Superman to Steven Spielberg’s E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, and Jurassic Park, movies were graciously accepted, and that acceptance later developed into this writer’s undying appreciation for all things motion picture related.

So, when producers Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, and CNN teamed up to create a series that entirely focuses on movies, there was no chance of this contributor passing up the opportunity to write about it.

The first episode of CNN’s The Movies: The Stories Behind The Movies We Love focuses on the films released in the 1980s. In an era that had marinated on the events of Vietnam, Watergate, and the Cold War, the film industry was looking to provide entertainment and social commentary in a unique way. It was the decade where Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were behind a number of its blockbusters. Where original comedies from the mind of John Landis and starring excellent talent like Eddie Murphy and Molly Ringwald reigned supreme. A decade that featured the debuts of future genius filmmakers like Tim Burton, Spike Lee, Steven Soderbergh, and Oliver Stone.

CNN’s The Movies, following the same format as its decades-focused predecessors (The SixtiesThe Seventies), presents the top names in the film industry and the critics who rate the content they released. Featured in the first episode are the likes of Hanks, Spielberg, Billy Crystal, Julia Roberts, the late John Singleton, writer Lawrence Kasdan, film critic Amy Nicholson, and many more discussing how the films in the ’80s defined the decade and set the path for the decades to come. If you are a film fanatic, a fan of CNN’s original programming, or simply looking to learn more about the world of cinema, this series should be added to your list.

CNN’s The Movies airs Sunday nights at 9pm EDT.
