A couple of years ago at this point, we received a confirmation that Lucasfilm and Rian Johnson had a pretty solid working relationship in the form of an announcement that he’d be doing a new trilogy of films. This trilogy would be set completely outside of all the events we’ve seen so far and would finally give us a chance to explore a world outside of the whole Rebel v. Empire struggle.

Of course, Star Wars: The Last Jedi came out, and since then, whiney fanboys have been running around with pitchforks, calling for his trilogy to get canned. In the time since then, there have been plenty of false “scoops” of Johnson abandoning his trilogy, but he has since debunked all that.

However, a recent red carpet interview with BANG Showbiz seems to hint at a bit more uncertainty. When asked if he’ll be stepping back into the Star Wars universe, Johnson said:

“Well, we’ll see. I’m still talking to Lucasfilm. They’re figuring out what they’re doing, and we’ll see what happens. I’ll be thrilled if it happens, I’m working on my own stuff too, and yeah, yeah yeah.”

Very interesting. Now, while this is all speculation on my part, I can only imagine Lucasfilm had planned Johnson working on his trilogy, but when Solo bombed, they were forced to figure out their new strategy, thereby placing Johnson’s films in a “maybe” pile as they iron out their plan.
