Ricky Jay, Renowned Magician And Star Of Boogie Nights And Deadwood, Passed Away at 70

 

Ricky Jay, known for his roles in Boogie Nights and Deadwood as well as his professional career as a magician, passed away Saturday at the age of 70.

Jay was first noticed in his one-man shows, which were directed by David Mamet. Shortly after, Jay was cast in Mamet’s House Of Games and thus began his appearances in major Hollywood productions. Aside from his appearances in the previously mentioned films, Jay had roles in Magnolia, Tomorrow Never Dies, The Spanish Prisoner, Mystery Men, and The Prestige.

Jay was also a consultant for films that involved magic, gambling and con jobs, including Francis Ford Coppola’s The Escape Artist and the Robert Redford classic The Natural. In the ’90s, Jay formed Deceptive Practices with firm partner Michael Weber and provide their service to film, television and stage productions. Jay and Weber designed the wheelchair that disguised Gary Sinise’s legs as he portrayed Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump. They went on to provide their talents for Congo, The Illusionist, Sneakers, Oceans Thirteen and the Broadway production of Angels in America, Part 2: Perestroika.

Weber announced Jay’s passing on his Twitter account on Saturday, tweeting “I am sorry to share that my remarkable friend, teacher, collaborator and co-conspirator is gone.” While details about Jay’s death have not been revealed, his attorney Stan Coleman confirmed his death on Saturday.
