Rings Of Power More VFX Than LOTR And Hobbit Movies Combined

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power gets a Season 3, at least, as the showrunners sign a long term deal with Amazon.

It has been revealed that The Rings of Power has more VFX shots than the LOTR and Hobbit movies combined. That’s pretty staggering considering the depth of VFX used for those 6 massive movies. in the August edition of Total Film (have in hand) one of the showrunners J. D. Payne talked about just how massive the scale is for this show. It’s pretty obvious why this is reported as the most expensive TV show ever made.

To demonstrate the sheer scale of the project, Payne says there are over 9,500 VFX shots in the first season alone (TF asks whether Amazon gave them a blank cheque (check in US) to which exec producer Weber says there were “limitations” put in place). And each season – there are five commissioned – will try to outdo the last.

Now if we go by the official numbers this is pretty staggering. To give you some context, amazon reportedly had 3,500 VFX shots in it’s opening seasons. Neither season so far of The Witcher had as much as Wheel of Time Season 1. In fact, if you combined all three you still don’t get to 9,500. Given these are far more modern fantasy takes, it’s not hard to wonder why it’s more than all the LOTR and Hobbit movies combined also. The LOTR movies actually used a lot on miniatures, but even most of those still had some VFX elements added.

I have no idea how this would compare to something like the final season of Game of Thrones? Until RoP that was the most expensive drama ever made for TV. I also assume given Payne’s comments to the magazine that if Rings of Power is a success, then the budget could be even bigger going forward. Being a huge Tolkien fan I certainly am aware of some of the potential upcoming content. It’s not going to be cheap to pull off, that’s for sure.

So, The Rings of Power has more VFX shots than the LOTR and Hobbit movies combined. Leave any thoughts you have about this int he usual spot below.
