It looks like Warner Bros. is pulling out all the stops on their upcoming standalone film Joker, which is set to features the Clown Prince of Crime outside of the Worlds of DC films (DCEU). Thus far, the film has an all-star lead in Joaquin Phoenix, and at the helm is The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips, and it’s set with a relatively low budget of $55 million, paving the way for what will likely be an R-rated gritty crime film.
Now, you may be able to put one more feather in the film’s cap. According to THR, living legend Robert De Niro is currently in talks to join the movie. His role is reported to be a talk show host who is “somehow instrumental” in the character’s origin in the film.

When the movie was first announced several months back, the films of Martin Scorsese were referenced, with Scorsese supposedly hoped to join as producer. The film was pitched something of a gritty 80s crime movie, and with De Niro starring in such classic films of that ilk, like Goodfellas and The Godfather: Part 2, it sounds like they are leaning HEAVILY into that.
We’ll have to wait and see if this actually goes through, but given how pretty much everything initially reported on for this film has ended up as true, it seems like a good bet that De Niro will be hopping on, especially with Warner Bros. seemingly giving the filmmakers a lot of creative freedom.
