There are certain film industry names, when mentioned together in the same sentence, that send a tingle up any cinephile’s spine. John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Quentin Tarantino and Samuel L. Jackson. Typically, these director/actor combinations result in elevated hype followed by a high quality product. Filmmaker Martin Scorsese has been blessed with having two highly talented actors as his go-to thespians at different eras in his career. In the late 20th century, he had Robert De Niro front and center. Then, at the start of the 21st century, it was Leonardo DiCaprio leading the way. In either case, the two men have excelled when teamed up with the creative genius referred to as “Marty” by his closest friends.
And now, it seems Scorsese may get both men in one film together.
Deadline announced on Tuesday morning that De Niro is in negotiations to star in Scorsese’s upcoming film Killers Of The Flower Moon, which currently as DiCaprio attached. According to sources, an offer is imminent and depending on final approval, schedules are being cleared to make way for production to begin middle of 2020. It was previously reported in 2017 by Deadline that Scorsese’s dream cast for the film was De Niro and DiCaprio. Based off of David Grann’s nonfiction book, Killers Of The Flower Moon tells the true crime tale of multiple murders of members of the Osage Indian tribe in 1920s Oklahoma. The murders occurred after the tribe discovered oil on their lands.
De Niro’s work on screen with Scorsese at the helm includes Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino. This fall, their upcoming Netflix film The Irishman marks their first time working together in nearly 25 years. Meanwhile, DiCaprio commanded the screen for Scorsese in Gangs Of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, and The Wolf Of Wall Street. Assuming negotiations are successful, Killers Of The Flower Moon would mark a sixth Scorsese collaboration for both De Niro and DiCaprio.
While Killers Of The Flower Moon is still in the pre-production, Scorsese’s The Irishman, starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel, Anna Paquin, and Ray Romano, premieres on Netflix September 27th.
