In the lead up to Avengers: Endgame we all thought the two characters most at risk of dying in the movie were Captain America and Iron Man. Whilst I predicted that a nice sendoff for Captain America would be to have Steve live out his life back in the past with Peggy, I still thought it more likely he would die in the end. Instead, I thought perhaps Tony Stark would retire from being Iron Man and live out a quiet life where he could occasionally drop back into cameo roles.
Of course now we’ve seen the movie (if you haven’t why did you click on this title), we know that instead it is Cap who retires and Tony that has to make the ultimate sacrifice to save everyone else. At the end of the movie, after being prompted by Doctor Strange, Tony Stark takes the Infinity Stones from the gauntlet and them uses the power of the Stones to snap away Thanos and all his army, thus both saving all the lives of his friends and the fate of the entire universe.

Whilst all the actors were understandably tight-lipped about Endgame prior to release, now the spoiler ban has been lifted, Robert Downey Jr. has shared a BTS image from the movie. It shows that ending for Tony Stark, when he tells Thanos, “I am Iron man” and clicks his fingers, ultimately dooming himself, check it out.

It was a really powerful scene, and we know from the directors the Russo’s that this moment was actually added in later as part of reshoots and the idea to have Tony deliver that line actually came from someone else in the production of the movie. It was definitely one of the most dramatic moments from the Endgame, although my personal favorite moment is still Cap using Mjolnir for the first time against Thanos.
