Robert Eggers Unleashes The First Trailer For Horror Epic ‘WERWULF’

Following the critical and commercial success of Nosferatu, filmmaker Robert Eggers is returning to the horror genre with what promises to be his darkest and most intense film yet.

Focus Features has released the first official trailer for WERWULF, the acclaimed director’s latest gothic horror film, which is set to arrive exclusively in theaters on Christmas Day, December 25.

The teaser offers only a glimpse of the nightmare awaiting audiences but establishes the film’s unsettling atmosphere, blending haunting imagery with the historical authenticity and psychological dread that have become Eggers’ signature style. Described as a harrowing story of devotion, damnation, and the darkness that resides within humanity, WERWULFappears poised to continue the filmmaker’s tradition of reimagining classic horror through a richly immersive lens.

Leading the cast is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, joined by frequent Eggers collaborator Willem Dafoe and Lily-Rose Depp, who reunites with the director after her acclaimed performance in 2024’s Nosferatu.

While Focus Features is keeping many plot details under wraps, the newly released trailer hints at a terrifying tale rooted in ancient folklore and supernatural terror. The film’s title references the historical spelling of “werewolf,” suggesting Eggers is once again drawing inspiration from centuries-old myths and legends to craft an authentic period horror experience.

Eggers has built a reputation for bringing meticulously researched historical settings to life in films such as The WitchThe LighthouseThe Northman, and Nosferatu. Each project has blended historical realism with psychological horror, earning the filmmaker widespread praise for his distinctive visual style and atmospheric storytelling.
