Robert Rodriguez Talks Directing The Latest Episode Of The Mandalorian

The latest episode of The Mandalorian was arguably the best in the series. Director Robert Rodriguez provided tons of great action along with a big dose of nostalgia. The episode was a blast for fans to watch, but as it turns out Rodriguez had just as much, or perhaps even more of a good time.

Rodriguez recently spoke with GamesRadar about how the opportunity came about as well as the experience of using his skills in the Star Wars universe. You can check out what he had to say about it below.

“I’m friends with Jon Favreau and he needed a last-minute replacement for a director. And so I said, ‘Sure, I’ll come play in the Star Wars universe!’ What a dream. And it’s fulfilled all my… it’s beyond my expectations, I mean, it was SO fun, you can’t imagine what it’s like to walk on a set that has the classic look of The Empire Strikes Back feel and look. It’s right after that era, right after the Return of the Jedi. It’s that era. So you really feel like you just walked into your childhood. All of a sudden you go up and touch things and go, ‘That’s the thing that Han Solo talked into when he shot the machine and told the stormtroopers not to come up’. I was like, ‘Wow, I thought I recognized that!’ It’s just a really strange, exhilarating experience to be in your childhood sets for real. And getting to make action! It’s really cool… The visual language is so embedded in our heads. So I have one of those [selfies] ‘Look, it’s me next to a control panel, isn’t that cool?’. It was so fun.”

Robert Rodriguez has his fantastic Mariachi trilogy, he has also done very dark and gritty films such as Sin City, and lighter projects such as Spy Kids. And now he has been initiated into Star Wars. Not a bad list of credits as far as the variety of genres.

If you’re current on the series you know the bounty hunter Boba Fett is alive and back in action. The episode moved quickly having Mando and Grogu get to Tython right a the beginning. And then we were treated to a house cleaning demonstration by Boba Fett. He was like Jason Bourne in space. I’m not sure how, but for me, the series just keeps getting better and better. I can’t wait for Friday!
