Rosario Dawson will once again be venturing into the comic world for her next role.
The veteran actress is set to star in the upcoming HBO Max pilot DMZ, based on the DC comic book series by Brian Wood. Produced by Warner Bros. Television, the series will be executive produced by award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Netflix’s When They See Us, Selma) and writer/showrunner Roberto Patino (Westworld, Sons Of Anarchy).

DMZ takes place in the near future, where the United States is in the middle of another civil war. Due to the war, Manhattan has been destroyed and labeled a demilitarized zone. The series will focus on Dawson’s Alma Ortego, a medic who travels throughout the war-torn land saving lives while searching for her missing son. While facing off with the gangs, militias, and warlords throughout the deserted land, she becomes the unlikely source of hope for survivors.
Tackling this role will not be Dawson’s first rodeo in the comic book world. The talented star appeared in Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City adaptations and appeared as “night nurse” Claire Temple throughout Netlfix’s Marvel shows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. DMZ also marks DuVernay’s second project connected to the DC universe. She is currently set to direct the adaption of Jack Kirby’s New Gods series, which she is co-writing alongside DC’s star comic writer Tom King.
There is no word yet as to when DMZ will premiere on the HBO Max streaming service.
