Rotten Tomatoes Confident In Gotti’s Positive Audience Score

Earlier this week, we reported on the bizarre publicity stunt from the folks pushing the film Gotti, which stars John Travolta in the titular role of John Gotti. The movie itself was raked through the coals by critics, sporting a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, with all 28 critics who reviewed it giving it a negative recommendation.

On the heels of that, the marketing released a clip that touted that audiences loved the film, and that you should trust yourself over “a troll behind a keyboard.” If you’re to look at the Rotten Tomatoes audiences score, you’ll notice that it’s hovering around the mid-60% as of this writing. Initially, the film was hovering around 78%, which got folks wondering how that was possible.

The film had around 7,000-plus user ratings and only made $1.9 million in its opening weekend. Incredibles 2, which made over $180 million in its opening weekend, only had around 7,800 users weigh in. Seems like a bit of an inconsistency, but the problems extended to the written reviews. One Redditor looked at the written reviews, noticing that of the 58 available, 45 only created their accounts this month. So is this an instance where the Gotti marketing went in and started trying to game the system?

Gizmodo asked Rotten Tomatoes just that, and one rep said “We closely monitor our platforms and haven’t determined there to be any problems. All of the reviews were left by active accounts.”

Does this mean Gotti didn’t try to game the system? Not necessarily, as Rotten Tomatoes could either be lying or simply unaware of any problems that may be going on.
