It’s getting close to three years now since Ryan Reynolds and company gave fans an R-rated Deadpool. Well received by both critics and fans, as well as being very profitable, the film showed executives that an R-rated comic book movie could work without having the name Watchmen attached to it.
If you somehow haven’t heard by now, Marvel has something special in the works in that Scarlet Johansson’s Black Widow will be getting her very own film. Even though she’s a veteran of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, her film will mark the second female-led film, with Captain Marvel of course being the first. However, it may still be able to have a female-first attributed to it, as well as an MCU-first, as there’s a chance it may be R-Rated.
This information that comes to us from a post on the Crazy Days and Nights blog. The information is unofficial is unconfirmed, so, grain, salt, and all of that. The blog seemed to imply that the decision has already been made, and will use Johansson’s gender as a scapegoat should things go wrong. Now that’s what the blog implied, that’s not from myself or LRM. I can’t see Marvel pulling any sort of nonsense like that. They’ve always stood behind their decisions, even the films on the lower end of the MCU.

Of the current characters within the MCU, Black Widow perhaps matches up best with an R-rated film. Making her solo film a spy thriller with a bit more grit could open up a new world of possibilities for Marvel’s shared universe. A downside is the box-office, which unfortunately could suffer due to not as many people being able to see the film, at least not witout being accompanied by an adult.
However, some of the Marvel comics are pretty graphic, and there certainly is an audience for this sort of film, and personally I think it’s time for Marvel to take this step.
