Nintendo likes to play things close to the chest. With the exception of a few big titles at a time, they generally like to keep their release schedule under wraps until a few months before. This allows them to make big reveals via their Nintendo Direct videos and consequently, it keeps the rumor machine churning at a healthy pace.
The latest rumors are pretty damn big and have to do with I.P.s Metroid and Paper Mario. Let’s start with the latter news. According to a user on ResetEra, we will be getting a Paper Mario sequel that sees a return to its RPG roots. Check out the ResetEra user’s post below:
So, if you’ve been waiting for the franchise to return to form, we may be in for a treat. This was corroborated by online scooper WabiSabi, who also said a Paper Mario game was set to come out this year. But that wasn’t all.
“Having looked into it for a bit, I find it reliable enough to complete back the mentions of Paper Mario and Metroid (not prime 4) for 2020. I’ll tweet out the details I back based on talks I had.”
That’s right. In addition to a new Paper Mario, a new 2D Metroid game is supposedly hitting this year. And not just any sequel. a sequel related to Metroid Fusion, which hit Game Boy Advance in the early 2000s.
Of course, we know there is a fourth Metroid Prime game in development, but last year, it was revealed that production started over, so we weren’t expecting anything from that. If true, this would be a great placeholder until the Prime game hit.
Of course, take this all with a grain of salt, but given how empty Nintendo’s 2020 slate is so far, this isn’t entirely ridiculous. They like to throw in unexpected surprises, and I’d say these two fit the bill as “unexpected,” but aren’t so unexpected that they’re unlikely.
