Russo Brother’s Explain How Avengers: Infinity War Originally Had Captain America In Thor’s Hero Moment And Why They Changed It.

Thinking back now it’s kind of hard to imagine Avengers: Infinity War being any different from the movie we saw at cinemas. However, movies are an evolving process and original plans get changed sometimes for the worse and sometimes for the better. In the case of Infinity War, the movie could have had a few very different moments if it was entirely left to directors the Russo brothers.

Two of the most lauded by fans and fist-pumping scenes in Avengers: Infinity War are the entrance of Captain America to save Vision and Wanda in Scotland and the arrival of Thor with Stormbreaker in hand mid-way through the battle of Wakanda. In the original version of the script, the Russo’s had neither of these scenes in the movie. In fact, the Wakandan entrance of Thor was originally supposed to be where Cap showed up for the first time. The Russo brothers then listened to pleas from other people at Marvel that Cap had to appear much sooner in the movie, the plan was then formed to have Cap appear out of the shadow of that train in Edinburgh to save Vision and Wanda from the attack by Thanos children.

Here is what director brothers told ET in a video interview.

Anthony Russo

“Everybody at Marvel, I think other than Joe and I, they were mad at us because we were bringing him in the movie so late [laughs]. We thought it was the right spot to do it, but after a while we kind of gave into everybody’s, ‘We need more Cap!’”

Joe Russo

“He had Thor’s heroic entrance in the Wakanda battle. That was originally Cap. Our thinking was that he was on the run, nobody could find him, and so we thought that it would be this really compelling way to use the character — especially because we were trying to thin the ranks out so we could track everyone — and then we realized we had a really good spot to bring him in earlier in Scotland, to save Vision and Wanda. And so we started moving around heroic moments for characters. But that choice about bringing Cap in, that was sort of at the heart of what we — the premise of the movie for us was always that because of what happened in Captain America: Civil War, because Cap and Tony had the falling out, because the Avengers are divided, this is why they lose to Thanos. Because they’re not together, they’re divided. So we were playing with this idea that it’s hard for Tony and Cap to get back together on the same team and having Cap sort of be late to the party because [Cap, Black Widow, and Falcon] are forced to live underground, and then hiding from the government. That was always the basic premise of the movie for us.”

Very interesting looking into the process of this movie, my own opinion, however, is fairly simple. The Russo’s listened to the right voices because for me Cap showing up out of the shadows and Thor smashing onto the field in Wakanda were two of the biggest moments of this movie. It also never altered their vision of this being a team divided, and Tony’s initial reluctance to make the call to Steve Rodgers still caused the Avengers to separate into two distinct teams who could not communicate with one another to counter the threat of Thanos.

What do you think of this revealing insight? Like me are you happy it turned out the way it did or would you have rather seen Cap get the Thor moment at the end? Sound off below in the comments.
