Saban’s Power Rangers Cast Lobbying For A Female Green Ranger

In a very busy few weeks of popular films, Saban’s Power Rangers hit theaters last Friday and did better than expected bringing in about $40.5 million, which still came second to the Disney juggernaut Beauty and the Beast which hauled in an additional $88 million domestically. The all new Power Rangers were able to connect to both an older generation that watched the 90’s series Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and the younger crowd who has seen some of the newer incarnations of the team. We now know that the franchise is planning to try and make multiple film story arc, so obviously we are going to see some other familiar characters pop up. A green ranger maybe? Or how about a white ranger?

Before I go on with the topic at hand I would like to give a SPOILER WARNING as I will be discussing some of the events of the film. If you have not watched the film it may be a good
idea to come back later.

Like most franchises these days, Saban’s Power Rangers had a mid credit scene that teased a very familiar character, Tommy Oliver. Fans of the 90’s show will quickly recognize him as the green ranger and later the white ranger. When his character was first introduced he was not an ally of the rangers but a adversary having being created by Rita to destroy them. In the film, the now rangers are sitting in detention and the teacher repeatedly calls for Tommy Oliver who is nowhere to be found, all we see is an empty desk with a green jacket.

An interesting development with this character going forward is that according the Hollywood Reporter, the cast is lobbying for this character to be a female. In an interview Dacre Montgomery, who plays Jason in the film, stated that “A lot of the cast and  I have discussed that we think it should be a girl. It makes it even: three girls, three boys.” He goes on to talk about how the scene was set up leaves the door open for the character to be of either gender, but regardless of that who ever it is that person will certainly create a lot of drama for the group.

With Rita having been a green ranger in the past, it would make sense to me for the power coin to once again gravitate to a female character. I feel that having the green ranger being female isn’t really an issue as long as itfits the story correctly. If the green character is in fact a female it is going to be interesting to see how they change the name, because I doubt they would
leave her name as Tommy. One thing is for sure, the Power Rangers are here to stay and the green ranger is on its way.

What are your thoughts? Should Tommy Oliver be a female? Also any casting ideas?
