Sabrina Could Have Been A Low-Budget Horror Film From Blumhouse

Well, this is an interesting little bit of trivia — The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which is set to hit Netflix later this month, almost ended up getting a completely different type of treatment. Yeah, I know. We just had a piece earlier today that discussed that the character almost ended up as a part of Riverdale, and after that, almost ended up on The CW.

However, it apparently almost ended up in a completely different DIFFERENT way. Like, low-budget horror movie. No joke. They were apparently looking to make the movie for Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, who is famous for putting out low budget, high concept horror pictures and turning a hefty profit. Here’s what The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told EW.

“For a long time I was trying to get ‘Sabrina’ done as a low-budget horror movie for Jason Blum [of Blumhouse Productions], and even wrote a screenplay with a friend that strangely, though it’s very different from the show, it did center on her 16th birthday. Ultimately, Jason didn’t want to pursue that, and thank goodness because we’re getting to do this as a TV show, which feels right.”

Ultimately, I think TV was also the right way to go. However, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious about what could have been. My mind goes to films like Get Out and The Purge, and I try to imagine just how dark and brutal things could have gotten with this property. I would have been on board, for sure.

But what do you think? Did they make the right decision? Let us know your thoughts down below!
