Sacha Baron Cohen Makes A Dramatic Turn In Netflix’s Upcoming Limited Series The Spy

Emmy-nominated comedic actor and writer Sacha Baron Cohen has had a long and beneficial career using his controversial brand of satirical comedy. From Da Ali G Show to Borat to his Showtime series Who Is America?, Cohen’s projects have made viewers laugh while also pointing out hypocrisies and injustices that are overlooked. Cohen has also appeared in less comedic fair (or those much lighter than what he creates) like Les Misérables and Alice Through The Looking Glass. Now, Cohen looks to move further away from comedy with his role in Netflix’s upcoming espionage thriller.

In the streaming service’s limited series The Spy, Cohen will portray Israeli spy Eli Cohen. The role has a bit of family connection since Eli Cohen is a distant relative of Sacha Baron Cohen’s. Deadline explains the synopsis for the series as follows:

The Spy is inspired by the story of legendary former Mossad agent Eli Cohen (Baron Cohen), who successfully goes undercover in Syria in the early 1960s. Cohen becomes close enough to ambitious military leaders and their rich friends to earn a game-changing level of trust about Syria’s biggest anti-Israel secret initiatives.

The Spy is written and directed by Gideon Raff, the creator of the Israeli drama series Prisoners Of War—which was the inspiration for the Showtime series Homeland. The cast of The Spy also includes Noah Emmerich (The Americans), Hadar Ratzon Rotem (Homeland), and Waleed Zuaiter (Colony). The series is set to premiere on Netflix on September 6th.
