With the impending Pokémon: Detective Pikachu film on its way out, it looks like we may very well be getting the video game movie to end the video game movie curse. Sure, we’ve had films that have done “okay” by most standards, but we have yet to have that runaway hit that sends Hollywood execs out to purchase every video game I.P. known to man. That being said, we do have an odd choice up for getting the silver screen treatment, and that’s Saints Row.

The ridiculous, best-selling video game series is headed into development for the big screen. On board to helm the movie is F. Gary Gray, director of such films as Straight Outta Compton, Men in Black: International, and the Fate of the Furious. Oh yeah, the dude also directed Friday, one of the best comedies out there of all time, so you know the man can handle comedy.

Writing the script is Greg Russo. Unfortunately, this is a case where we have virtually nothing of his to see. He is on board to write two other impending video game adaptations — Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat — so it seems like he’s carved a little niche for himself within Tinseltown. He is also the writer for the upcoming Netflix movie Death Note 2.
