Hollywood certainly has a love affair with nostalgia. In a world where brand recognition is everything, they are constantly in search of the next big franchise to resurrect. Occasionally, however, there are some projects that are resurrected not just to cash in on previously-said nostalgia, but to conclude a story that was formerly left open-ended. Enter Samurai Jack, a series that those in my generation view fondly of from the early 2000s.
In an age where animation was perceived as childish and silly, Samurai Jack stood as a testament of what the medium could if they don’t talk down to kids. It ran for four 13-seasons, and despite it’s critical acclaim, never truly finished. Back in December of 2015, it was announced that Adult Swim would be resurrecting the series for one final season.
Today, they released the first official trailer for the season, and if you were a fan of the original series, chances are it doesn’t disappoint.
Check it out below!
As a fan of anime, I’ve always lamented the fact that animation only exists in two capacities in America: either as family friendly fare, or as adult comedies. While both genres have their place within the animation medium, it was always a disappointment that we got so few action or story-oriented animated series. There have been a few trailblazers such as The Legend of Korra, who dare to tell story-heavy animated tales, but on the whole, it’s an approach that’s mostly avoided.
Seeing this trailer, I can’t but help but be more than a bit excited that we’ll be getting an adult-oriented show that isn’t just around to tell dirty jokes.
The official synopsis for Season 5 of Samurai Jack is below:
“It’s been 50 years since we saw Samurai Jack and time has not been kind to him. Aku has destroyed every time portal and Jack has stopped aging, a side effect of time travel. It seems he is cursed to just roam the land for all eternity.
