Sasha Lane Set To Star In Gillian Flynn’s Amazon Series Utopia

Sasha Lane, star of American Honey and the upcoming Hellboy, has been cast in an Amazon series.

Lane will be starring in Utopia, a dark thriller created by author Gillian Flynn (Sharp ObjectsGone Girl). The series will follow a group of young adults who are hunted by a deep state organization shorty after discovering a mythical graphic novel featuring conspiracy theories that are seeming to come true. Lane will be playing the lead character, Jessica Hyde. The character is described as “tough and feral after a life on the run from a mysterious and dangerous group, Jessica believes all the answers about her perplexing life story may be hidden in the graphic novel Utopia.”

Flynn’s works as an author and screenwriter have primarily featured female leads that differ from what the stereotypes would typically look like. Her female protagonists, like Camille Parker in Sharp Objects and Libby Day in Dark Places, are emotionally-damaged, complex beings. They’re human. They have demons and a dark past that continues to haunt them as they look for a way to conquer it. Flynn has also excelled in creating a diabolical sociopath like Amy Dunne in Gone Girl.

In the case of Utopia, Flynn explained in a statement how Lane came to be the right choice for the Jessica Hyde character.

“As I’ve been writing Utopia and trying to imagine the actor who could possibly embody Jessica Hyde, Sasha Lane has constantly kicked her way into my mind. She has the shape-shifting ability to feel at once raw, unpredictable and a little unnerving while also making you want to wrap your arms around her. I couldn’t be more thrilled to have her play this utterly unique character.”

Utopia was ordered straight-to-series by Amazon last April, but they have yet to give a release date for the series.
