Screen Legend Albert Finney Has Passed Away

Legendary film actor Albert Finney has died. He was 82.

The veteran thespian has been in the industry for over 50 years, making his first appearance in the TV movie She Stoops To Conquer. He would go on to be cast as the lead in 1963 film Tom Jones, telling the story of the adopted bastard in 18th century England. He went on to play iconic characters like Ebenezer Scrooge in 1970’s Scrooge, Hercule Poirot in 1974’s Murder On The Orient Express, Daddy Warbucks in 1982’s Annie, and Leo in 1990’s memorable Cohen Brothers film Miller’s Crossing.

In the 21st century, Finney continued to be involved in critically-acclaimed films, like Academy Award winners Erin BrockovichTraffic and the AFI Film of the Year in 2007 Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead. He was no stranger to mainstream hits either, appearing in Big FishOcean’s TwelveCorpse BrideThe Bourne Ultimatum and The Bourne Legacy. His last motion picture role was appearing as Kincade alongside Daniel Craig in the finale to the James Bond 007 film Skyfall.

Craig lead a number of tributes from the film industry in honor of Finney. Below is a list of a few of the quotes from those who had the honor of knowing and working with him.

“I’m deeply saddened by the news of Albert Finney’s passing,” he said. “The world has lost a giant… Wherever Albert is now, I hope there are horses and good company.” – Bond costar Daniel Craig.

 “it was a privilege to work with him and an honour to have had him as part of our Bond family.” – Bond producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

“[I will] miss him enormously… Albert was one of our greatest actors, significant not just for his talent but for the way he made British theatre and cinema reflect life as it was truly lived. Off screen he brought his infectious sense of humour to work every morning. He loved every aspect of the business and we in turn loved and revered him.” – Bourne franchise director Paul Greengrass.

Many took to Twitter to pay their respects, including Stephen Merchant, Bernadette Peters, Edgar Wright and Ava DuVernay. DuVernay’s tweet is attached below.

The theatre and film industries lost an iconic figure who’s presence in a production elevated the quality of its content. Rest in peace, Mr. Finney. Your work will live on in cinematic eternity.
