Belgian actor Jean-Claude Van Damme proves he still has what it takes to be a martial arts action star. In fact, his latest film throws back to the height of his martial arts action films of the 1990s with The Last Mercenary (Le dernier mercenaire)on Netflix.
The French film has the action star back in the spotlight as he’ll for his estranged son in France.
Here’s the official synopsis of The Last Mercenary:
A mysterious former secret service agent must urgently return to France when his estranged son is falsely accused of arms and drug trafficking by the government, following a blunder by an overzealous bureaucrat and a mafia operation.
Jean-Claude Van Damme stars with Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla, Samir Decazza, Patrick Timsit, Eric Judor, and Miou-Miou. David Charhon directed the action film from a script written by Charhon and Ismael Sy Savane.

Jean-Claude Van Damme and director David Charhon joined the moderator MTV News’ Josh Horowitz for the Comic-Con@Home virtual panel presentation at the San Diego Comic-Con International. During this discussion of the movie, they released an official sneak peek clip from The Last Mercenary. In the clip, Jean-Claude Van Damme proves he can still do the splits as he showcases his hand-to-hand combat abilities against some mercenaries holding a hostage.
With this preview clip, it doesn’t look like Jean-Claude Van Damme lost a step with his fighting skills.
The Last Mercenary (Le dernier mercenaire) streams on Netflix on Friday, July 30.
