Fans of the cult hit 2011 film Goon, have something to cheer about. While it’s been said for a couple of years now that Jay Baruchel (This Is The End) and Evan Goldberg (Superbad) were working on a sequel, star Seann William Scott has now revealed that it’s actually on track to start filming in two months.
In a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) session with fans, Scott shed the following light on the project:
“Heh! Well, I did a bit of fight training for GOON. For GOON 2, I’ve been fight-training for the past month, and next month in May I start working with an MMA fighter, and then some skating (obviously, a lot of skating). We start shooting GOON 2 in mid-June, and if everybody does their jobs and we execute the amazing script that Jay and his co-writer wrote, the fucking movie would be wicked.”
While not a success in theaters (it made less than $7 million at the box office), Goon was a hit with critics and fans alike. Thanks to streaming services like Netflix, and positive buzz, it’s gained a nice little following. The first film’s cast included Scott, Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), and Eugene Levy (American Pie, Waiting For Guffman). It centered on a kind-hearted misfit (Scott) who becomes the enforcer for a local minor league hockey team. Director Michael Dowse was announced as being back at the helm for the sequel back in 2012.
